Robarts, Aldham E. '47
Born in Toronto, Aldham Robarts graduated from Ridley in 1947.  He attended the University of Toronto studying commerce and finance, and Queen’s University where he earned the ACBA (Associate of the Canadian Bankers Association). He began his working career in 1953 with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in southern Ontario.  In 1954, he joined John Holt & Co. (Liverpool) Limited, a major international trading, procurement and finance operation,where he served on the overseas managerial staff in Nigeria and Ghana and in the Liverpool Head Office. He moved to Proctor & Gamble in 1959 where he served as an Advertising Executive until 1965 when he joined the Thomson newspaper organization with sales, marketing and advertising responsibilities in Scotland, England, Thailand, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Iran. In 1973, Aldham was named the Chairman and Managing Director of Globe Newspaper Limited in Liverpool.He founded the free distribution Wirral Globe, which won more industry awards for excellence than any other free distribution newspaper in the UK. Among his many accomplishments in his publishing career, Aldham founded Globe Print Services (Merseyside) Limited in 1976, and, between 1976 and 2003, has served as the founding Director of North West Auto Mart Limited, founding Chairman of Scottish Auto Trader Limited, Scottish Supermart Limited, Chairman of Dayout Promotions Limited, Director of Express Truckstop Limited, Chairman of Newsco Publications Limited and founding Director of Irish Auto Trader Limited. Throughout his career, Aldham has served as Chairman, President or committee member on numerous trade associations and in 1992 was made an honourary member of the IFPA (International Free Papers of America).  He has dedicated himself to his adopted country and to his adopted city of Liverpool and has truly lived the Ridley motto, Terar dum Prosim, making significant contributions to numerous organizations, including Rotary, the Liverpool Playhouse, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, the Royal Astronomical Society, Glyndwr University Wrexham, the National Health Service and Liverpool John Moores University.  Aldham provided the seed money for two libraries at Liverpool John Moores University: the Aldham Robarts Library (1994) and the Avril Robarts Library (1997), named for his wife. In 1988, he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Clwyd by the Queen for services to the National Health Service. In 2015, he was named to the Order of the British Empire (OBE) as “Aldham Edward Robarts, Benefactor, Liverpool John Moores University, services to Higher Education and to the City of Liverpool”.
