Hailing from a small rural town, Catherine He attributes her transformative growth to her time boarding at Ridley. She emphasizes how this experience instilled in her qualities of independence, critical thinking and compassion while broadening her perspectives.“Ridley is unique in that the student body is truly international, and teachers encourage critical thinking. I have been exposed to so many different perspectives that have expanded my worldview and shaped me into a more compassionate and selfless person,” she explains.While the rigorous IB Diploma Programme equipped her with the resilience and adaptability to conquer any academic obstacle, she credits the support of Ridley’s guidance team with helping her achieve early admission to her dream school. “They have never turned me away when I had questions. I can say with conviction that Ridley has prepared me extensively to be adaptive in the face of challenges in university and beyond.”As a student, Catherine founded the UNICEF Club in Grade 10, participated in Ridley Theatre, and excelled in squash, tennis, and hockey. In her final year, she served as a Prefect. Catherine will continue to advocate for the marginalized as a Public Policy major with the hopes of “speaking up for those not widely represented in our political system.”

Pursuing a plethora of interests, passions and talents at Ridley, he says, helped him understand his strengths, weaknesses and areas for personal growth, shaping his career aspirations and guiding his academic and professional choices.Demir participated in rowing, soccer, and rugby. He was also involved in business clubs and DECA and held the position of House Captain for AB East. Taking leadership roles in clubs, teams, and student governance taught Demir valuable skills in planning, organization, and managing tasks, instilling in him a sense of responsibility and accountability. The opportunity to dialogue and engage with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures, he continues, broadened his horizons and fostered an inclusive worldview.“It helped me appreciate the value of diversity, empathy, and collaboration.”The guidance team helped Demir choose subjects aligned with his interests and future goals and guided him through university applications, resulting in successful applications to his top choice schools.Demir advises younger students to reflect on their interests and seek wisdom from friends, parents and teachers when preparing for life after Ridley, emphasizing the importance of exploring passions, setting achievable goals and seeking guidance to make informed decisions. “Start thinking about what your interests are and what you see yourself doing 10 to 20 years from now. People close to us often know us better than ourselves, and their wisdom can guide us,” he explains.

The supportive community, friendships and connections fostered during Edgar Lai’s 10-year journey at Ridley have inspired him to strive for excellence both academically and beyond school walls. Relishing the opportunity to discover new interests while honing his existing skills, Edgar feels confident, well-rounded and prepared for the transition to university, ready to pursue his interests.“The level of engagement of my teachers really drove my interest,” he explains. “Outside the classroom, I’ve been able to try activities that I would never have thought about trying, such as squash, robotics and trivia.”Edgar played soccer from Grade 4 onwards, squash from Grade 7 to 11 and did robotics and School Reach from Grade 9 to 12. These experiences, he says, further enriched his education and personal growth at Ridley.Edgar began contemplating his university career in Grade 10. With the guidance team's support, he strategically planned for his future aspirations, and the team helped him consider different pathways within the health sciences field, emphasizing personal fit over rankings and prestige when exploring universities.His advice to younger students is to cherish their time at Ridley and not stress about life after high school. “Ridley will always prepare you to the best of their ability for life after high school, so don’t stress, just enjoy the moment,” he says.

As an international student, David Meng found a close-knit and diverse community at Ridley, preparing him both academically and emotionally for the challenges of post-secondary education. “Life at Ridley was a memorable and life-changing experience. The amount of care and support I received from my teachers, housemaster and advisors was exceptional,” he reflects.David credits the challenging IB Diploma Programme and his joyful participation in various clubs and activities with broadening his horizons and equipping him with the mindset and confidence to face the future. Transitioning to university, David says he was adequately prepared for greater independence and flexibility at university, and he thanks Mr. Mitchell and Ridley’s professional and supportive guidance team for providing invaluable support, guiding him through each step and alleviating the overwhelming pressures of college applications.David advises younger students to maintain an open mind and stay connected to themselves to feel prepared for life after Ridley. “It might take a while to adapt to life after Ridley as it did for me. However, your inner peace might alleviate the anxieties and help you navigate through the changes with grace,” he shares.
