Lewis, Janet M.

Lewis, Janet M.
A leader in independent school education, Janet Lewis became Ridley’s first female Housemaster in 1978 when the school admitted girls into boarding. In 1987, she was appointed as the first female Assistant Headmaster, acting as Assistant Headmaster of Administration until 1996. She also served the school as a mathematics teacher, Co-Director of Admissions and was the first Director of Financial Assistance.

She has been described as “a bulwark of common sense, understanding and integrity in the swirl of school dramatics.” Lewis left Ridley in 1994 to become the Executive Director of the Conference of Independent Schools (CIS) and then Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) from 1996 to 2002, where she worked tirelessly to support and advance independent school education in Canada. Lewis left CIS in 2004 and retired to St. Catharines.
