A ‘Ridley Lifer,’ Andrew entered the Lower School in Grade 6 in 1972 and graduated in 1980. He played soccer and rugby and was a member of the swim team for four years, captaining the team and winning the H.A. Staples Award. Following a Bachelor of Science degree from the University Of Waterloo, he attended Huron College from 1985 to 1988 earning his Master of Divinity (Hons) and his life career was founded. Andrew was ordained a deacon in 1988 and a priest in 1989 in the Diocese of Niagara. From 1988 to 2001, he served in parishes in Guelph, Acton and Oakville, Ontario and from 2001 to 2016, he was the rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Toronto where, under Andrew’s leadership, the average weekly attendance increased by 30 per cent, the annual operating budget was doubled and a $2.1 million campaign for renovation and accessibility of the church was realized. In 2016, he was named Dean of Toronto and Rector of St. James Cathedral, where he increased financial stewardship by 20 per cent in two years. In 2018, the Very Reverend Andrew Asbil was elected as the 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Toronto As the Bishop of Toronto, Andrew will be the chief pastor of the diocese, which is the most populous in the Canadian church with 54,000 Anglicans on its rolls and 230 congregations and ministries in 183 parishes.
