Navigating the Canadian education system can feel like learning a new language. In Canada, "secondary school" is often synonymous with "high school," typically covering Grades 9 through 12. At Ridley College, we guide students through a seamless transition from our Middle School (Grades 7–8) to our Upper School (Grades 9–12/PG). This includes our unique Middle School Exploratory Programme, which allows younger students to discover their passions, and our dual-diploma pathway (OSSD and IB) in the Upper School. Whether you are curious about what age a student starts Grade 7 or how the "Post-Grad" year works, this guide provides a clear roadmap for the journey from age 11 to 18.
Secondary school is the stage of education that follows elementary school and precedes university or college.
In Ontario, and specifically at Ridley College, we often refer to the later years of secondary education as "Upper School." While the term "high school" is widely used in North American culture, secondary education is the formal term used by the Ministry of Education to describe the curriculum and requirements for students in their final years of mandatory schooling.
Yes. In the Canadian context, secondary school is high school. They are used interchangeably. However, at Ridley, we differentiate between the "Middle School" years (the bridge between childhood and adolescence) and the "Upper School" years (the final preparation for the world beyond our gates).
One of the most frequent questions parents feel "embarrassed" to ask is: How old should my child be in a specific grade? There is no need to hesitate; understanding the alignment between age and grade is the first step in planning your child’s academic future.
Below is a breakdown of the typical age-to-grade alignment in the Canadian system, with a focus on the Ridley College structure.
| Grade Level | Student Age (Typical) | School Division (Ridley) | Focus Area |
| Grade 6 | 11 – 12 | Lower School | Transition & Skill Building |
| Grade 7 | 12 – 13 | Middle School | Inquiry & Exploration |
| Grade 8 | 13 – 14 | Middle School | Leadership & Graduation Prep |
| Grade 9 | 14 – 15 | Upper School | Credit Accumulation (OSSD) |
| Grade 10 | 15 – 16 | Upper School | Career & Civics / IB Prep |
| Grade 11 | 16 – 17 | Upper School | IB Diploma Programme (DP) Year 1 |
| Grade 12 | 17 – 18 | Upper School | IB DP Year 2 & University Apps |
| PG (Post-Grad) | 18+ | Upper School | Athletic/Academic Specialization |
At Ridley, we recognize that the jump from being a "kid" in elementary school to a "teenager" in high school is a massive developmental leap. This is why we treat Middle School (Grades 7 and 8) as a vital bridge.
Many parents ask, what grades are middle schools? Ridley places Grades 7 through 8 in our dedicated Middle School. This environment is specifically designed to support the social-emotional and academic needs of students aged 12 to 14.
One of the hallmarks of a Ridley education is our Middle School Exploratory Programme. We believe that at age 12, 13, or 14, students shouldn't have to choose just one path.
This programme allows students to "sample" a vast array of interests. Over the course of the Middle School years, students rotate through different co-curricular activities, including:
By the time a student reaches Grade 9, they aren't just starting high school;, they are entering it with a portfolio of experiences and a clearer sense of who they are.
When a student enters Grade 9, they officially begin their journey toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). At Ridley, this is also where the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework becomes more intensive.
In these years, students focus on building a strong foundation. They begin earning "credits" toward their diploma.
In the final two years of secondary school, Ridley students can choose to pursue the IB Diploma Programme, a rigorous, globally recognized curriculum that prepares them for the world’s top universities. Students can also choose a hybrid option or the OSSD.
Ridley is one of the few schools in Canada that offers boarding starting in Grade 6. While many associate boarding school with "Upper School" (Grades 9–12), our Middle School boarding programme provides a structured, supportive environment for younger students to develop independence.
What is the age for Grade 7 in Canada?
Typically, a student in Grade 7 is 12 years old, turning 13 during the academic year. At Ridley, Grade 7 is the first year of our Middle School division.
What is the difference between a Middle School and a Junior High?
These terms are often used for the same age group. However, "Middle School" (Grades 7–8) often follows a specific philosophy focused on the transition from a single-classroom teacher to a multi-subject model, whereas "Junior High" (often Grades 7–9) can feel more like a mini-high school.
How many credits are needed for a secondary school diploma in Ontario?
To earn the OSSD, students must earn 30 credits (18 compulsory and 12 optional), complete 40 hours of community involvement and pass the provincial literacy requirement.
What is a "Post-Grad" (PG) year?
A Post-Grad year is an optional fifth year of secondary school (often referred to as Grade 13 or 12b). It is used by students who want to further mature, improve their academic standing for university applications or compete in high-performance athletics like Ridley's Prep Hockey, Basketball, Rowing or Figure Skating.
How old are you in Grade 8?
A student in Grade 8 is typically 13 years old, turning 14. This is the final year of Middle School at Ridley before transitioning into the Upper School.
