Butterfield, George D.B. '57

George Butterfield arrived at Ridley from Bermuda in 1952 and immersed himself in every aspect of Ridley life, graduating in 1957 as a Prefect and winning the Headmaster’s Prize for Zealous Acheivement.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College, University of Toronto in 1961 and a Bachelor of Law from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1965. In 1966, with his wife, Martha and her brother, Sidney Robinson ’57, George co-founded Butterfield and Robinson which offers biking trips for students around Europe. It has since blossomed into one of North America's best-known specialty travel companies, known for its high-end cycling tours.

George
continues to serve as Butterfield and Robinson’s “spiritual leader, resident travel sage and voyageur extraordinaire.” The success of Butterfield and Robinson has enabled George to give back to his community; he is an active and generous supporter of national and international organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund, PEN Canada and World Literacy of Canada. He has also served as Chairperson for the Ontario College of Art and Design University's capital campaign, which raised $40 million. In 2018, George and Martha donated $1.25 million to Trinity College, University Toronto to launch a new programme in environmental issues for first-year students named the Butterfield Environment and Sustainability Stream.

In 2006, George 
was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and was awarded an honourary degree from Ontario College of Art and Design University in 2007. A loyal supporter of Ridley, in 2019 George endowed the Butterfield Global Services Fund to assist students travelling on the school’s annual service trips.
