Why Ridley?

The Ridley Difference

It’s Not Just an Education. It’s a Life-Shaping Experience.

The Ridley College experience transforms lives.

Ridley students are empowered to embrace their individuality, develop who they are, strive for who they will be, and define the lives they will lead. They develop the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social skills needed to succeed. They are inspired to acquire the knowledge, explore the truths, and nurture the values that will allow them to lead flourishing lives.

— Darcy, Entered Ridley as a Grade 9 student

“You’re given the opportunity here to really do something great. If you want to take it, it’s there. For me, what’s been different here is the independence. The boarding environment makes you independent, but you also have to learn to take responsibility for that independence. That’s been very rewarding to me. The teachers here also make it a really special place. They’re incredible and having classes with fewer people makes it easy to connect with them.”
The Ridley experience integrates a traditional liberal arts education with individual learning, the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, a learner-driven culture and campus community, and a commitment of service to others. This unique combination creates students who are focused, interested, challenged, and engaged — in the classroom, in athletic competition, and after school.

Ridley students are not afraid to take chances, innovate, and learn from their successes and failures. They are individuals with passion, perseverance and stamina. At Ridley, we call that grit.

  • Our Approach to Learning

Our inquiry-based education empowers students to guide their own learning, discover and pursue their passions, while they persevere through challenges. It encourages critical thinking, dialogue, analysis, and immersive exploration of the ideas that will transform our globe. A Ridley education is enhanced by the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework. As part of the framework, the IB learner profile represents 10 attributes, which prepare students to become responsible members of local, national and global communities.  These ten characteristics equip Ridleians to apply the skills they have learned and to address any situation they encounter in their lives. Students come to understand that diverse opinions matter and that others, with their differences, can also be right.
  • A Positive Education

Our individualized approach to learning is enhanced by evidence-based research in positive psychology and the principles of the PERMA-V model of psychological well-being that lay the foundation for a flourishing life by focusing on:
    P: Positive emotion
    E: Engagement
    R: Relationships
    M: Meaning
    A: Accomplishments
    V: Vitality

Based on this science, Ridley equips students to deal with the daily demands of life and learning by creating an environment that:

    •Generates positive emotions
    •Practices mindfulness
    •Builds on strengths not deficits
    •Models grit and resilience
    •Nurtures positive relationships
    •Encourages goal setting and accomplishments
    •Fuels our vitality
  • A Community Experience

Ridley College’s co-educational boarding and day school experience fosters individual development. Our Lower School offers Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 classes and junior boarding beginning in Grade 5. The Upper School consists of Grade 9 to 12, with a post-graduate option. All students are part of a wider community that includes their peers, faculty, and staff.
  • A Global Perspective

The Ridley community is built on boarding school traditions from Great Britain, the United States, and Canada and shaped by Canadian values. But it is enhanced by a global perspective provided by students from over 44 countries.

Our belief in the importance of a world view to a flourishing life has been part of our genetic makeup for decades. It is the foundation of a campus culture that embraces diversity to expose students to ideas and approaches to life that they cannot get anywhere else. As an IB World School, we practice that belief by teaching the social literacy and competency students need to be leaders in a global community.
  • A Professional Learning Culture

We also strive to continuously improve our community and enhance the Ridley experience.

Our teachers and leaders are continually enrolled in professional development that enables them to understand and apply the science behind learning. Beyond training, we devote time in our calendars for faculty collaboration, which creates reflective practitioners who are committed to working together to help students learn and thrive.
  • A Home to Be Proud Of

Our community experience is enhanced by the Ridley campus. From its grand entrance to its sweeping playing fields and the stately architecture of its 10 boarding houses, Ridley’s historic, 90-acre campus offers an idyllic setting for its learner-centred culture and campus community. Students live, learn, and play against a backdrop of mature trees nestled in the heart of the Niagara region.

—Chibuzo, Entered Ridley as a Grade 10 student

“I have teachers who love what they do, and as a result I’m inspired to do well. Ridley really fits me because I have lots of options, so there is always something that appeals to my personality and likes. Because of this school I now have friends from all over the world who I can visit. I would probably never get that at a regular high school. I think that also makes me more prepared for university and the diversity I will encounter there.”
