2025/26 Year in Review
The Mathematics Department congratulates all students who challenged themselves this year through participation in math competitions. Whether competing locally, nationally or internationally, Ridley students demonstrated commitment, collaboration and strong critical thinking throughout the year.
This year marked an important milestone, with two teams representing Ridley at prestigious competitions in the United States.
Math Majors of America Tournament at Yale (MMATHS)
Six students competed at Yale, engaging with complex, university-level problems while connecting with peers from around the world. During the trip, the team toured the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Brown University.

Team members:
Princeton University Mathematics Competition (PUMaC)
Six students competed at PUMaC, visited Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania, and connected with alumni to learn more about academic pathways and university life.

Team members:
Ridley celebrated an exceptional individual result this year.
Yuqi (Cindy) Liu ’26 earned a score of 141 out of 150 on the AMC 12, placing her in the top 1 per cent of more than 80,000 students worldwide. She also received the 2026 Jane Street AMC 12B Certificate of Excellence, becoming the first Ridley student to receive this distinction. The award recognizes top-performing young women across the MAA Seaway Section, including most of New York State, Ontario and Quebec.
Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC)
Hanyu (Hannah) Hu ’27 qualified for the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad Team Selection Test following a strong performance on the COMC. The test brings together 10 to 12 of the top junior female mathematicians in Canada to compete for a place on the national team. Hannah’s qualification marks the first time a Ridley student has reached this stage.
University of Waterloo Mathematics Contests
Ridley students earned medals and honourable mentions across several national contests:
American Mathematics Competitions
American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME)
Qualifiers included Hanhua (Edward) Hu ’27, Hanyu (Hannah) Hu ’26, Sha (Emma) Rongping ’27, Jingchen (Charlie) Su ’26, Jiayi (Jerry) Xin ’27, Yao (Jerry) Zhang ’27, Yiming Zhu ’26, Yoyo Meng ’28 and Qihao (Jayden) Chen ’28
International competitions
Team-based competitions
Students also participated in collaborative competitions, including:
These experiences strengthened teamwork, communication and advanced problem-solving skills while connecting students with peers around the world.
As the year draws to a close, the department recognizes growing enthusiasm for mathematics enrichment at Ridley. Increased participation and expanded training opportunities continue to strengthen the programme.
Next year, Ridley will expand offerings through new partnerships:
Additional sessions will be offered at an extra cost, with registration details shared in September.
Students interested in continuing their learning over the summer are encouraged to explore:
The department thanks all students who embraced the challenge of competitive mathematics this year. Their dedication and curiosity continue to drive the programme forward, and we look ahead to building on this momentum in 2026/27.
