Why Ridley?

IB Programme

Structured for Learning Excellence

As an IB World School, Ridley is the only independent boarding school in Canada and one of only three in North America authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum programme.

Prior study in the IB framework is not a pre-requisite for a Ridley education. New students can enter the programme at any level. Our learner-centred approach to education enables all students to adapt quickly and thrive within the programme. Ridley also maintains an “open access” policy for any student wishing to undertake the IB Diploma Programme level study as either a selection of courses or as a full Diploma Programme.

Built on Best Practices

The IB framework was developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a non-profit educational foundation dedicated to creating a better world through education. This unique framework has been developed independently of government and national systems. It incorporates best practices identified through educational research and by the IB’s global community of schools.

These 10 attributes are part of a learner profile the IB believes can help individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national, and global communities.

An IB education focuses on developing students who are:

Focused on Inquiry-Based Learning

Based on the learner profile, the IB framework encourages students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 to think critically, challenge assumptions, and consider both local and global contexts based on the principle of reaction and action. Students learn to react to what they learn, examine their reactions, and then put their conclusions into action in their own lives, communities, and futures. This learning process develops students who will build a better world through intercultural understanding and respect.

Three Levels of Study

Designed specifically for students from three to 19 years of age, the IB continuum programme offers three levels of study.

List of 6 items.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) focuses on the development of students as inquirers, both within and beyond the classroom. It prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to meaningfully participate in the world around them. Students complete the PYP Programme with an exhibition of their work.

The five-year Middle Years Programme (MYP) encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. It is specifically structured to provide a broad and balanced education for early adolescents. Students complete the MYP Programme with a personal project.

The Diploma Programme enables students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research, and undertake a project that often involves community service. It is structured to allow students to flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. Students complete the DP Programme by delivering an extended essay.
