Reid, I. A. Ross '71
A Newfoundlander, Reid followed his father Ian ’44 to Ridley. After his graduation from Huron College at the University of Western Ontario, Reid served as chief of staff to then Finance Minister John Crosbie and as an advisor to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. In the 1988 federal election, he was elected as Member of Parliament for St. John’s East. He became Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans in 1989, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development in 1991. In 1993, under Prime Minister Kim Campbell, Reid was named Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. After leaving the House of Commons in 1993, Reid has worked as an international consultant on human rights and democratic development, notably for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. He has worked in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Ukraine. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of IMPACS, the Institute for Media, Policy and Civil Society. In 2003 Reid returned to Newfoundland where he has since acted as the Progressive Conservative party’s campaign chair for three successful elections then serving as a Deputy Minister to Premier Danny Williams and Chief of Staff to Premier Kathy Dunderdale.
