In his book “Spark”, John J. Ratey, MD, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an internationally recognized expert in neuropsychiatry, explained that exercise sparks brain functions and improves learning by:

• Improving the mind’s alertness, attention, mood, and motivation
• Preparing and encouraging nerve cells to bind to one another, which is the cellular    basis for logging in new information
• Spurring the development of new nerve cells from stem cells in the hippocampus
