New York City and Art Students: A Match Made in Ridley During a recent trip, twenty-eight Grade 12 Visual Art students toured galleries and museums in New York City. The busy itinerary included tours of the Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick collection, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of Art. These tours were punctuated by the frenetic and chaotic hum of Manhattan, and the juxtaposition of calm, contemplative art galleries with busy streets created a provocative contrast of experience for students.
Catherine Paleczny During the summer of 2007 Catherine Paleczny: Ridley College faculty member of the Visual Arts Department, was selected to create a new body of work at the Jingdezhen PWS Experimental Factory in China.
The Renaissance Comes Alive for Ridley Art Students He had hearts is his eyes and was gorgeous! Too bad he was 503 years old! I am speaking, of course, of Michelangelo’s masterpiece David. David is currently living in Florence in the beautiful Accademia Gallery.
This was but one of the highlights of the recent Art Trip to Italy where there was so much to see and so little time to see it all. We were continually awed by the incredible work that was done at a time that many of us today consider to have been quite primitive. We looked at many amazing historic buildings such as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon, the Coliseum and the many cathedrals and churches. Knowing that these structures were built without power tools or heavy equipment is a hard fact to grasp. Not only are the structures remarkable, but also so are all the paintings and sculptures inside, and all done by hand.
New York City Art Trip On Monday, April 2nd, the Grade 12 Art and Design students returned from four days of museum and gallery hopping in New York City – home to the world’s best collections of twentieth century art and, arguably, the world’s most dynamic contemporary art scene. The tour began with a beautiful view of Manhattan from the top of the Rockefeller building, where students could gather a sense of direction and perspective for the days to come, and then the gallery visits began. The busy itinerary included tours of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cloisters, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney, the Frick Collection and the myriad of private commercial galleries clustered in what has become known as the Chelsea art district.
The sheer range of visual expression exhibited in these galleries brought to life the scope of what constitutes the tradition of visual art in the human story. Assyrian stone relief carving, Medieval triptychs, oil paintings, Art Deco buildings, a smashed piano and video projections all are part of the tradition, and this range can be overwhelming when it is encountered in the span of a few days...
Theatre Season Opens Congratulations to the cast and crew of A Midsummer Night’s Dream whose production was “very notably discharged” in the newly refurbished Performing Arts Centre. Shakespeare’s beloved tale of fairy mischief, misplaced love and miscast mechanicals played out before a sold out audience of 150 people. Audience members were transported from the intimate setting of Ridley’s new studio theatre, first to an Elizabethan court, then to an enchanted wood. Dressed in sumptuous and whimsical costumes on loan from the Stratford Festival, the cast created a magic all their own, navigating the complexities of Shakespearean verse while revealing simple human truths at the heart of the story.
