While attending Ridley, Patrick was a successful athlete, his team winning the LBF football championship. He was awarded his colours or “Big R”. After Ridley he went to the University of Guelph and played varsity football for the Guelph Gryphons as a letterman for five years. He also became a College All Star and second draft choice of the Edmonton Eskimos football team.
He graduated from Guelph with an Honours B.Sc. in Physics and Mathematics with a minor in Biology. Later he obtained an M.Sc. in Physiology.
While working as a scientist for Fisheries and Oceans and a graduate student at Dalhousie University he obtained a Ph.D. in Marine Ecology.
Patrick used his skills in mathematics and computer science to go into the world of academic finance.
Having experienced some success, he became a philanthropist. He joined the Board of Governors of Ridley in 1989 and remained a Governor until 2002. During this period, he funded the Headmaster’s new residence, Kenyon Lett House in memory of his grandfather Kenyon Lett ’96.
Patrick joined the Ridley College Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees and became its Chairman for 8 years retiring in 2002.
He also funded numerous bursaries and scholarships at other schools and universities;the most notable being the Patrick F. Lett Graduate Student Assistance Bursary at Dalhousie University. This fund operates as a “safety net” for graduate students in biology and/or mathematics. To date it has assisted 300 students pursue higher education and had a direct and lasting impact on their future careers and contributions.
In 1992 Dalhousie awarded Patrick a Doctor of Laws LL.D. for excellence in business.
While on the Board at Ridley, Patrick was involved in preparing a long-range plan for the school with Terry Scandrett ’61 and Bruce Mitchell ’64. There were an additional 200 participants and consultants involved in the process.
In 1999 Patrick funded The Lett Family Fund for Information Technology as an endowment. He was made one of three vice-presidents of the school.
The Lett Family is one of three, four generational families to attend Ridley: Kenyon Lett ’96, Terrance H. ’26, Stephen MacLeod ’28, David K. ’59, Tristram S. ’66, Patrick F. ’67, Brittany ’98, Cambria ’01, and Tristram A. ’02.
