Gray, James K. OR'51
James Gray was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario in 1933. After being educated at Ridley and the University of British Columbia, he went to Calgary in 1956 to pursue a career in Alberta's energy sector. In 1973, he co-founded Canadian Hunter Exploration, an organization that became one of Canada's largest and most successful natural gas companies. Gray has served as an independent director of Brookfield Asset Management and is also a director emeritus of Canadian National Railway, Director of Phoenix Technology Services, and honorary chair of the Canada West Foundation. He has long served in leadership positions for a wide range of community enterprises in Calgary: the Science Alberta Foundation, YMCA, Canada West Foundation, Calgary Academy, Calgary Inc., and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Charter for Business. Gray has helped underprivileged and learning-disabled children, aboriginal residents of Calgary, chemically dependent youths, and victims of domestic violence. He and his wife have been honorary chairpersons of the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter's annual fund-raising dinner. Gray's fund-raising has furthered medical and scientific work, and research into economic and public policy issues. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Calgary in 1991, was given a citation for citizenship by the government of Canada in 1992, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1995. Gray was recognized in 2002 with the Alberta Order of Excellence.
