Riyaz spent 8 years at Ridley College before graduating and continuing his education at Harvard. In 1986, he graduted with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies. He then earned his J.D. at Yale Law School in 1991.
Riyaz Kanji is regarded as one of the leading trial and appellate litigators on behalf of Indian nations and tribes across the United States. Chambers U.S.A. places him at the top of its list of notable practitioners in the field, describing him as “a superb litigator and a leading choice for appellate cases,” and as “strategic with his litigation tactics and extremely approachable.”
After Yale Law, Riyaz served as a law clerk to the Honorable Betty Fletcher of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Justice David Souter of the United States Supreme Court. After his clerkships, Riyaz completed two years as a Skadden Fellow at Evergreen Legal Services in Seattle, where he worked on the landmark case of United States v. Washington, which vindicated tribal treaty rights. Following that post, Riyaz spent three years as an associate at Williams and Connolly in Washington, D.C., where, in addition to significant tribal representation, he litigated complex matters for clients including President Clinton, ABC News, and Georgetown University. Riyaz then founded his present firm, Kanji & Katzen, which focuses on tribal and environmental litigation.
Any young alumni looking for a well-accomplished professional in law should consider Riyaz as a mentor.
