Loat, Chris '62 - Cricket

It is fair to say that one of the true loves of Chris Loat’s ‘62 life is sport. As a player, coach and organizational leader, his appreciation for all that the sporting life has to offer is unmatched. As a Ridley student, he was a member of the First Cricket, First Squash and First Soccer teams. The opportunity to play sports at Ridley gave him his love of sport and fostered the importance of giving back. After graduation, he played hockey, squash, football, soccer and rugby for Trinity College, University of Toronto. Throughout his life, he continued to play both squash – he retired from playing in his sixties – and cricket, serving as captain of the St. Catharines Cricket Club, and playing competitively into his fifties. He remains an avid croquet competitor, travelling regularly for tournaments throughout Canada, the US and the UK, and was named Croquet Canada USCA Player of the Year in 2014. He coached countless young athletes at Ridley, beginning in 1968, in soccer, squash, hockey, and he coached cricket until the school stopped playing it in 2001. He has served on the executives of the Ontario Cricket and the Canadian Cricket Associations, the Niagara Squash Racquets Association and Squash Ontario and he is currently the treasurer of Croquet Canada. His dedicated service on behalf of local, regional and national sport organizations is a testament to how he has paid back and used sport to enrich and enhance the lives of others.

“After Chris proposed to me, he said he had one more thing to ask. It was: ‘Please don't ever ask me to stop playing sports.’ That’s pretty much defined our marriage.” –  Trish Loat
