Coy, Frank '57 - Hockey

His has been (and still is) a varied and successful sporting career. Frank Coy ’57 can truly be called a lifelong athlete. Here at Ridley he was a scrapper who made it to the boxing finals three years in a row. He played First Football and was captain of the First Hockey and Cricket teams. Though hard pressed to pin-down a favourite Ridley memory, he’ll settle for the goal he scored from centre ice against UCC with Johnny Bassett between the pipes. He spent his summers playing minor lacrosse. After graduation, he moved on to Middlebury College where he played NCAA Division 1 lacrosse, earning his letter in 1958. He was also a letterman four times over playing varsity hockey. In the years that followed, he took up curling at a championship level, ran marathons and, in his sixties, his competitive edge still strong, took part in the National Masters Swimming Championships, medaling in three events. But most impressive is how this inductee shares his love of sport, nurturing young people and strengthening the community through coaching and fundraising initiatives. In partnership with area YMCAs his “Frank’s Swim for Kids” program involves more than 200 swimmers a year and has raised over $90,000 to send children to camp.

“Teamwork, whether in sport or in the corporate world is more important than any individual recognition: The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the one on the back.”
